Overview

## Tap Services: Installation, Replacement & Repair

Taps are the most frequently used fixtures in your home — a kitchen tap is operated an average of 40 times per day. When they drip, stick, spray unpredictably, or fail to deliver hot water, the inconvenience is constant. We install and repair every type of tap used in UK kitchens and bathrooms.

Our tap services include: repairing dripping taps (ceramic disc cartridge replacement, washer replacement, O-ring renewal), replacing old taps with new units, installing mixer taps where separate hot and cold taps currently exist, fitting pull-out spray kitchen taps, connecting instant boiling water taps (Quooker, Grohe Blue, InSinkErator), and installing outside garden taps.

We work with all major brassware brands: Bristan, Grohe, Hansgrohe, Crosswater, Roca, Ideal Standard, and many others. Whether you've bought your taps already or want us to supply them, we ensure compatibility with your sink or basin, water pressure, and existing pipework before installation.

Tap problems are almost always repairable. A dripping tap typically needs a new ceramic disc cartridge or compression washer — a repair that takes 20–30 minutes and costs a fraction of a new tap. We diagnose first and recommend replacement only when repair is no longer economical.

Why It Matters

## Why a Dripping Tap Is More Expensive Than You Think

A single dripping tap wastes approximately 5,500 litres of water per year. On a metered supply, that's around £18 per tap. A house with three dripping taps wastes over 16,000 litres annually — enough to fill a swimming pool — and adds £55+ to your water bill. The repair costs less than six months of wasted water.

Beyond the water cost, a dripping tap accelerates limescale build-up in the tap body, spout, and aerator. In Manchester's moderately hard water area, limescale deposits can eventually seize internal components, turning a simple washer change into a full tap replacement.

A dripping hot water tap is worse still — it's not just wasting water, it's wasting the energy used to heat that water. Your boiler fires to maintain cylinder temperature or the combi boiler activates every time the drip triggers the flow sensor. Over a year, the combined water and energy cost of a dripping hot tap can exceed £50.

Ignoring a stiff tap handle leads to broken ceramic discs and damaged valve seats. Forcing a stiff tap wears the internal components faster and can crack the ceramic cartridge, causing a sudden full-flow leak. Replacing a worn cartridge before it fails completely is always cheaper than dealing with an emergency leak.

How We Work

## Our Proven Process

1

### Diagnosis

We identify whether the problem is a worn washer, failed cartridge, damaged valve seat, or corroded body. Most diagnoses take under 10 minutes.

2

### Repair or Replace Decision

We recommend the most cost-effective solution. If a £3 washer fixes it, that's what we do. We explain the options clearly so you can decide.

3

### Fix or Install

Repairs are completed immediately using parts from our van stock. New tap installations include removing the old unit, cleaning the connections, and fitting the new tap with fresh flexible hoses and isolation valves.

4

### Test & Check

We run both hot and cold, check for leaks under the sink, verify the aerator flow is even, and ensure isolation valves are operating correctly.

5

### Clean-Up & Guarantee

The work area is cleaned, any old parts are taken away, and you receive a written guarantee on the repair or installation.

Benefits

## What You Get When You Choose DPS

### Repair First Philosophy

We fix taps rather than replace them wherever possible. A £60 cartridge replacement extends the life of a £200 tap by 5+ years. We don't manufacture reasons to sell you new taps.

### Vast Parts Stock

We carry ceramic disc cartridges, compression washers, O-rings, flexible hoses, isolation valves, and aerators for all common tap brands on the van. Most repairs are completed in a single visit.

### Compatibility Checked

Before fitting new taps, we verify tap hole size, supply pipe positions, water pressure compatibility, and basin/sink thickness. Mismatched taps are the most common DIY tap installation mistake.

### Isolation Valves Fitted

We install isolation valves on every new tap connection. This means future repairs can be carried out without turning off the entire house water supply — saving time and inconvenience.

### Outside Taps Installed

Garden taps with frost-resistant valves, non-return valves (legally required to prevent backflow), and isolation for winter shutdown. Complete installation in 1–2 hours.

### Instant Boiling Taps

We install and plumb Quooker, Grohe Blue, InSinkErator, and other instant hot/boiling water systems. These require dedicated supply connections, filtration, and electrical supply — all of which we handle.

In Detail

## Taps: Types, Mechanisms & Technical Considerations

Understanding tap types and mechanisms helps you make informed decisions about repair versus replacement, and choosing the right tap for your needs. Here's a comprehensive overview of what we work with daily across Manchester homes.

Compression taps are the oldest design, still found in many Manchester properties. They use a rubber washer pressed against a brass seat by the tap handle. When the washer wears, the tap drips. Washer replacement is the simplest plumbing repair — but it needs doing correctly. Over-tightening damages the brass seat, which then causes premature washer wear. If the seat is damaged, we re-seat it using a seat cutter before fitting a new washer.

Ceramic disc taps are the modern standard. Instead of a rubber washer, two polished ceramic discs slide against each other. Quarter-turn operation (90 degrees from off to full flow) is the hallmark of a ceramic disc tap. When these drip, the ceramic cartridge needs replacing. Cartridges are manufacturer-specific — a Bristan cartridge won't fit a Grohe tap. We carry the most common cartridges and can source any manufacturer-specific part within 24 hours.

Monobloc mixer taps combine hot and cold water through a single spout and are operated by a single lever or twin handles. They require a minimum hole diameter of 32mm (standard) or 35mm (some designs). Fitting a monobloc where separate pillar taps existed requires a blanking plate or plug for the second hole, plus conversion from separate 15mm supplies to flexible hose connections.

Kitchen taps have specific requirements. Pull-out spray taps need a weighted hose retractor installed under the sink. Bridge mixers have wider fixing centres than monoblocs. Belfast sink taps often use wall-mounted bib taps rather than deck-mounted units. We assess the sink, worktop thickness, and under-sink space before recommending a tap type.

Bathroom basin taps vary between pillar taps (separate hot and cold, requiring two tap holes), monobloc mixers (single hole), three-hole mixers (separate hot lever, cold lever, and spout — each in its own hole), and wall-mounted basin mixers (no holes in the basin at all, requiring concealed pipework in the wall).

Water pressure determines tap performance. Low-pressure systems (gravity-fed) require taps rated for 0.1 bar minimum. Many modern designer taps are designed for mains pressure (1.0 bar+) and perform poorly on gravity systems. We check pressure before installation and recommend appropriate taps — or suggest a pump to boost pressure if needed.

Flexi-hose connections have largely replaced rigid copper tail-pipe connections for tap supplies. We use stainless steel braided hoses (not nylon) for reliability. Every hose is connected with a new fibre washer and hand-tightened plus quarter-turn with a spanner — over-tightening distorts the washer and causes leaks.
